Climbing in Colorado

La Plata Peak -14, 336 ft

I had been looking forward to going on one of Doug Ault's infamous Colorado trips for the past five years. Even after all that anticipation, when I finally had the opportunity to go this summer it still lived up to all of my expectations: cold 4am mornings, beautiful aspen groves, driving the van down 4-wheel-drive-only "roads" that were more like riverbeds, breathtaking vistas, climbing and aching and gasping for air, false summits, sweet fellowship, victorious summits, reading and worship by campfire, flat tires and car trouble along with extraordinary provision. "Hey, does this trail come with any sweet mods?" we joked. But sometimes there simply are no shortcuts.
